A Love Letter to Winter

A Love Letter to Winter

Dear Winter,

Thank you for the lovely holiday season. I especially enjoyed the quiet snow falling on Thanksgiving. It made the whole day soft and left the world crystal bright and sparkling. I love it when you do that. The ice storm last week, however, was a bit much. Yeah it was pretty but some of the tree limbs snapped off. You might wanna go a little lighter on the hard freeze next time. But, dear friend, I have to admit: I love you.

I love your cold winds. They make my cheeks rosy when I am out for a walk. I love your piles of snow they make the world quiet and clean white. And I get some exercise when I go out to shovel. I love your ice crystals they make the trees sparkle on crisp sunny days. And they put delicate patterns on my window panes. I love your freezing temperatures I get to wear all my warm woolies. And I want to knit more and sit fireside in the evenings. I love the quiet days you provide so I will slow down and stay toasty inside.

I know there are many who hate you. They moan about your length. You do seem to go on and on some years. I suspect you are just jealous of Summer and all the great press she enjoys. You even get overexcited and snow in several states at a time. Seriously you should think twice before dumping so much love in one place. It does not help your image. But I understand you are not being difficult on purpose. Your purpose is to give the world a break, let it hibernate, rejuvenate, and get ready for Spring. I know you feel left out. Everyone wants to get through with you so fast. But I love you. I am glad you are here and you make me smile.

With love,

  1. Hi Lisa. It’s Shirley.
I love your post today with your most respectful letter to winter. I too love winter. The heat and humidity of the summer time have been known to make me grumpy at times. My husband will confirm that. Fall and winter are my favorite seasons. I love to pull out the woolies . Love my sweaters and fleece and sweat shirts. Love to cuddle up with a hot chocolate piled high with whip cream. Spread my warm fleece throw over me and read a good book. I love the electric blanket that keeps me toasty and warm all night.
The snow is so beautiful . Winter doesn’t take a back seat to any of the other seasons when it comes to beauty. Speaking of beauty, where we live in Ohio it was beautiful last night. The half moon giving off radiant light. The sky full of stars. I love winter for all these reasons.
Lisa, you are a girl after my own heart.
