Chasing the Blues


Autumn is my favorite season. I love cuddling up in warm clothes. I like the heavy stew of flavors that the harvest brings. But I also know there are times when this season can be depressing.

Do the Amish get depressed? Of course they do! We are all prone to the blues sometimes. I am not talking about serious depression that needs medical attention or counseling. Those are times it is wise to seek help. Rather, I am thinking of the times when we find ourselves low and in need of cheering up.

Autumn is a turning in time. The days are shorter. I spend more time inside. Rain makes the skies grey. And this year I have moved cross-country to a whole new community. I am alone more often as I find new friends, which will take time. Much as the adventure of our move is thrilling it is hard work to settle in a new place. Finding the library, where to shop, a new place to worship, new doctor, dentist, mechanic, all the details of life need to be found from scratch.

I do not have kids to manage now. It’s just me and my husband, a couple of empty nesters. So there will be many times he is gone to work all day and I am unpacking and getting work done on and around the house.

It’s a big job and will take time. So I am thinking ahead. I know all this change of place, season and lifestyle will be overwhelming. And sometimes the weather is not going to help me out. No sunshine streaming into my new windows. I thought I’d start creating a list of things that will ease the blues when they come. (Maybe you have some ideas to share too.)

Blues Chasers

Give myself the luxury of escaping into a good book all afternoon
Bake a favorite recipe and turn a blind eye to the calories
Have breakfast for dinner
Give myself permission to feel sad for a little while
Start a new knit project even if I already have one on the needles
Make a cup of tea and admire the autumn trees in my new yard
Watch a favorite chick flick
Phone call to a good friend for a long chat

These are little ways I will offer myself comfort. My question to you: How do you ease a blue mood? When there is one too many grey days in a row what do you do?

  1. When I’m feeling low I try to do something to occupy my mind. In the morning I always try to start the day off right with my devotions and prayer. While working I take breaks and read a chapter from what ever book I’m currently reading. Then there is these neat blog sites that I love to participate in. It’s always so nice when the person writing the blog answers the comments back like you do. It shows that the writer actually does read the comments.
    These things I’ve listed help me to get over the blues on these dull rainy days.
