The Mighty Dollar | Guest Post & Giveaway by Suzanne Woods Fisher

swf-scavenger

Today, please welcome to Not Quite Amish author Suzanne Woods Fisher! Book one, The Letters, in Suzanne’s new series, Inn at Eagle Hill, is about to release on August 1. Suzanne is hosting a scavenger hunt July 23 – August 1, and I’m one of the stops! Keep an eye on Suzanne’s blog for a clue as to that day’s scavenger-hunt stop and visit for a sneak peek at The Letters and the chance to win a copy of the book!

“Money is not the measure of man, but often of finding out how small he is.” Amish proverb

The Letters is inspired by a true story about a Mennonite who was found guilty of mismanaging investment funds. Many of the investors were Plain and, although entitled to, they refused to make claims to the SEC to receive any funds from liquidated assets. Instead, Amish and Mennonite communities across the country took up donations to help reimburse those who had lost money.

Startling, isn’t it? Yet it’s a common response of the Amish and Mennonites. For biblical reasons, they won’t take anyone to court and accuse them of wrongdoing. They believe in letting God handle justice. Instead, they quietly step in to help one another with the aftereffects of wrongdoing or natural disasters. Money is a tool to the Amish, not an end in itself. While they have a work ethic that can eventually accumulate wealth, they aren’t trying to get rich. “Money is there to help others,” one Amish bishop said.

How often do you worry about money? How would you define a successful life? Have you ever asked yourself, “What does that definition of success cost me?”

  7. I believe the same – money is a tool. Most of my friends are “money-freaks” and need money and lots of it. I need it, but only for necessities. My friends do not seem to know what necessities are.

  8. Teresa Young says:

I do worry about money – but then I realize we do have enough for our needs. Sometimes I don’t have enough for my ‘wants’ though. That’s when I need to take a step back & appreciate what I have. The Amish have many lessons to teach us.

  16. Rebecca says:

The Amish version of forgiveness is so completely counter culture that it is shocking to many people. Yet, I find it refreshing and impressive. I imagine there are times when a person struggles to forgive inwardly as quickly as they profess forgiveness outwardly. But it is a testimony of their personal journey of sanctification. I would enjoy winning a copy of this book. Thank you for this opportunity. My email address is: GlamorousLooks (at) live (dot) com
